Data Sheet Info

Pink-footed Goose, Anser brachyrhynchus, is a species of goose found in cropland and grassland ecosystems. It breeds only in Svalbard, Iceland and east Greenland, with the entire global breeding range hence confined to Europe. The species breeds on rocky outcrops, crags and steep river gorges in open arctic tundra, especially near seabird colonies. The species overwinters on extensive areas of saltmarsh in estuaries and on flat agricultural land (e.g. improved or fertilised grasslands, stubble fields, pastures and newly sown cereal fields). In Scotland favoured winter daytime roosting sites include estuarine mudflats, lochs and reservoirs (European Red List 2015).

Anser brachyrhynchus has a winter population size of 418000-427000 individuals in the EU27. The winter population trend in the EU27 is Increasing in the short term and Increasing in the long term.

The EU population status of Anser brachyrhynchus was assessed as Secure, because the species does not meet any of the IUCN Red List criteria for threatened or Near Threatened, or the criteria for Depleted or Declining (the EU27 population or range has not declined by 20% or more since 1980).
